This project began when we witnessed an odd man in Broad Acres Park in Houston TX get out of his car, walk up to an enormous burl on a dead oak tree and place something into it. After he left I walked over to the tree and found that he had buried a ziplock bag under a pile of bark. Inside the bag were two sheets of note paper one with a letter addressed “My Dearest J” and signed “Love V,” and the other with an illustration of a man that could only be V. Initially, believing that I was reading the letters of a forbidden romance, I began a routine of covertly removing, photographing and placing the letters back into the tree.
